Ivory
The tusk from the upper jaw of an elephant was used to make artifacts and sculptures. In the Shōsō-in, many small articles, like rulers, plectrums, penknives, and Buddhist implements were made of ivory, some stained and given carved designs (bachiru). Ivory was also inlaid into game boards and boxes, used for box legs, and carved into open work decorations.
