ツユクサ(つゆくさ)tsuyukusa
Asiatic Dayflower
Commelina communis. A tall plant with pointed leaves and small blue and white flowers that bloom for only one day. The juice of the flower has been extracted as a blue dye since ancient times in Japan, though it is light sensitive. Today it functions primarily as an ink to outline designs on fabric in preparation for dyeing or embroidery. In addition, tsuyukusa works as a medicine to treat fever, inflammation, and sore throats.
