Penknife or whittling knife. These small sword-like knives were usually worn as a decoration at the waist (haishokuhin). While some were primarily decorative, others were put to practical use. In particular, they were used to shave off the writing on the wooden writing tablet (mokkan) that courtiers carried to take notes on.
