シュロ（棕櫚）(しゅろ)shuro
ヤシ科の常緑高木。幹は直立して高さ三～七メートルになり、棕櫚皮(しゅろがわ)という黒褐色の葉鞘(ようしょう)に包まれる。材は床柱(とこばしら)など、棕櫚皮の繊維は網や敷物、箒(ほうき)などを作る。

Shuro
Fan Palm. Palm trees have leaves coming out of their trunks and those of the fan palm spread out like a ribbed open fan. The bases of the leaves of the Trachycarpus fan palms, which are wide spread in Asia, have strong meshed fibers that give the trunk a hairy appearance. These fibers are used to make ropes, mats, baskets, and brushes.
