Originally, the enclosed ground in which any shōsō (repository) was located. Today, however, all shōsō-in have disappeared except that of the temple Tōdaiji, in Nara, so the name has come to refer exclusively to the Shōsō-in of Tōdaiji, now administered by the Office of the Shōsō-in under the Imperial Household Agency.
