Acorns from the oak tree are boiled and mordanted with ash lye to produce a yellow brown color referred to as “white acorn.” When the acorn dye is mordanted with iron, it produces dark grey or black, referred to as “black acorn.” In the Nara period the color-fast properties of this tannin-based dye led to its being associated with constancy.
