Native to the Middle East and Central Asia, the fat-tailed sheep have either long fat tails, with fat accumulated along the tail making it heavy, or broad fat tails, where the fat lies at the base of the tail and in the buttocks. The wool is coarse: well-suited to felting and rug-making rather than garments worn next to the skin.
