紗(しゃ)sha
Simple gauze weave
Also leno. To create this open weave, adjacent pairs of warps are crossed and uncrossed forming vertical ribs with open spaces between them. The effect is a gossamer fabric. Nara period examples are fewer than those of the technically more “complex” gauze weave (ra), which forms a mesh by reconfiguring the crossed pairs.
