赤漆(せきしつ)sekishitsu
木地を蘇芳(すおう)などで赤色に着色し、その上に生漆(きうるし)あるいは透漆(すきうるし)を塗ったもの。木地の染色が漆を透かして見えるため、赤漆と称される。奈良時代に広く用途が知られ、木製以外にも葛(かずら)編みの地に施した例が知られる。

Red lacquer technique
This method of red lacquering involves staining the base red, often with sappanwood dye, and then coating it with transparent lacquer. It was widely used in the Nara period on woodwork, as well as on woven basketry. This differs from another method of red lacquering (shu urushi) in which vermilion or iron oxide is mixed into the transparent lacquer before application.
