Buddhist ritual petals used in ceremonies to enact the scattering of flowers to celebrate the descent of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Real flowers and leaves may be used, but more frequently paper is cut in the form of a petal and beautifully decorated. During memorial services these are scattered as an offering while chanting. To this day, during large outdoor rituals at Tōdaiji, sange petals dropped from the roof flutter about wafted by the breeze.
