Numerous varieties of flowering cherry trees grow in Japan today, but their popularity is more recent than the Nara period. Cherry wood is heavy, durable, and smooth with a satiny straight grain. Shades vary from light to the dark heartwood. The strong yet easily worked wood was used already in the Nara period for making sculptures, musical instruments, boxes, and boats. Strips of cherry with the bark still attached were bent into curved shapes.
