犀角(さいかく)saikaku
犀の角(つの)。古来、杯や刀子(とうす)の把、帯の飾りなどの工芸素材として用いられ、黒い斑文の入った烏犀角は特に珍重された。また、粉末は解熱剤などの薬として服用された。

Rhinoceros horn
Rhinoceros horn was imported for making specialty objects and valued for its rarity. Examples with scattered spots were known as hansai, while black ones, usaikaku, were the most valued and used to create special decorative effects. Technically the horn is not bone but densely packed skin and hairs.
