羅(ら)ra
Ra
Complex gauze weave, an openwork weave structure where the silk warps are crossed and re-crossed to form a mesh. When two adjacent warps cross first to the right and them to the left, it is known as ami (net) ra. When two, then four warps cross in a sequence, it is known as kago (basket) ra. Diagonal lattices and lozenge patterns can be made by combining ami and kago inter-crossings. In contrast, simple gauze, or sha, has single pairs of adjacent warps consistently cross and uncross, forming vertical ribs. Sha is much less common among the Shōsō-in textiles.
