“Large sleeve”

In the Nara period, ceremonial over garments were made with wide open cuffs, the extra yardage adding dignity to the wearer. While in later centuries the ōsode referred to garments with rectangular, double-width, long, open sleeves (e.g. the Heian period jūnihitoe), in the Nara period, the sleeves were trapezoidal, narrower at the armpit and wider at the cuff. The one remaining ōsode in the Shōsō-in has, in addition, a square cloth attached at the back shoulder, the use of which is no longer known.
