Mitsuda

Oil-coated or painted decoration. This term encompasses the technique of applying an overall coating of perilla or linseed oil to a wood surface or to a painting executed in pigments mixed with animal-skin glue. On lacquer, it refers to designs painted from a paste made from pigments mixed with perilla or linseed oil that has been boiled together with lead monoxide. The Japanese term mitsudasō is thought to be based on a Chinese translation of a Persian word.
