銘・銘文(めい・めいぶん)mei, meibun
Inscription
Inscriptions (meibun) can be found on quite a number of the Shōsō-in treasures, either written onto the objects or onto a tag attached to the items. They provide valuable historical and cultural information. Textiles and other items sent as tax payment bear the name of the province where they were made and a date. Bags, masks, costumes, offering tables, and other items often have inscriptions noting such information as their content, the occasion of their use, a person, or a place. Ink inscriptions are called bokusho, while carved or incised inscriptions on wood and stone or metal are called kokumei. Inscriptions on metal often note the weight of the object.
