Paper mulberry

Broussonetia kazinoki. A low bush with long, strong inner bark fibers. The branches are cut back to harvest the bark yearly. To make paper, the bark is stripped from the branches, the fibers cooked and washed and then beat till fine. To form the paper sheets, the fibers are suspended in water and then scooped up on a screen in a mold. Each sheet is then couched and dried. To make thread out of paper mulberry, the inner bark fibers are split lengthwise and then ply-joined base to tip into a continuous thread. See also Choshi.
