Paulownia imperialis is a tall deciduous, fast-growing tree with three-lobed leaves and tubular purple flowers native to East Asia. The very light, somewhat aromatic wood is particularly well-suited for making chests since it acts as a natural humidity control. It was also used for mask carving, particularly the large gigaku masks, and in making musical instruments.
