Sheet gold is hammered till it is very thin and preserved on square sheets of paper as gold leaf. The surface to be given a gold leaf cover is spread with an adhesive, generally lacquer, and then the squares of gold are placed on it. For repetitive patterns, the adhesive is applied through a stencil and the excess gold leaf is brushed away.
