挂甲(けいこう)keikō
Keikō
Ancient-style Japanese armor brought from the Asian continent during the fifth century and forerunner of the ōyoroi. Numerous narrow iron or leather scales with lashing holes were strung together to form body, shoulder, hip and thigh protection. As an assemblage of small pieces, despite the weight, the keikō armor allowed for the flexibility necessary in mounted combat. The Tōdaiji kenmotsu chō (Dedicatory Records of Tōdaiji) lists ninety keikō.
