カヤツリグサ(かやつりぐさ)kayatsurigusa
カヤツリグサ科の一年草。北海道を除く日本全土の荒地や田畑に生える。茎は三角柱状で葉は線形で先が細くとがる。多くは雑草だが、笠や筵(むしろ)、籠などを編むのに利用された。

Sedge
Cyperaceae; a generic name for the monocot plants with triangular stems, spirally arranged leaves, and small flowers, of which there are several thousand species. Generally growing in wetlands, sedges are used much like rushes to make coarse mats or bundled fillers that are then covered with cloth to form the core for items like tablemats and box linings.
