Japanese nutmeg
Torreya nucifera. A relative of the yew, this evergreen needle tree grows to twenty meters in height. The yellowish wood is solid with a fine grain. Today it is often used to make go and shōgi game boards, but since the late Nara period, it has been used frequently to make Buddhist statues. The few examples of kaya found among the Shōsō-in treasures are decorative elements on chests, offering stands and game boards.
