Egōro
Long-handled censer. Buddhist monks and nuns carry burning incense as they proceed into the worship area, purifying the precincts along the way. These censors have flared rim braziers set on a low foot and long handles that are bent at the far end to stabilize the implement when it is set on a table during the service. Some in the Shōsō-in are simple vessels of bronze and other alloys, while others are highly ornate and enhanced by lion weights that balance the censer while it is being held.
