大仏殿(だいぶつでん)Daibutsuden
Daibutsuden
The Great Buddha Hall of Tōdaiji was constructed under Emperor Shōmu and, according to the Tōdaiji Records (Tōdaiji yōroku), completed in 751. It houses the Great Buddha, and it was the venue for the Kaigen-e, the Consecration Ceremony of the Great Buddha in 752. The Daibutsuden was burned down twice, and the one that stands today is smaller than the original.
