This scrolling pattern is based on a stylized rendition of curvilinear grape vines with ripe grapes hanging here and there. The motif can be found on ancient Greek pottery, and passed through Sassanian Persia, and China on its way to Japan. In Japan grapevine scroll motifs appear in the 7th century and were produced into the 8th century.
