マコモ(真菰)(まこも)makomo
Makomo
Zizania latifolia or Manchurian wild rice. Growing naturally in the wetlands of Asia, makomo was once harvested for both its grain and its edible stems (makomo-take). Today only the swollen juicy gall stems are eaten. Left to dry, the blackened galls can be used for coloring. The grass-like leaves were bundled and used as stuffing for furniture like arm rests.
