Tenon and mortise

A tenon and mortise join is a method of securing two pieces of wood, stone, or metal together and involves making a protruding tenon in one element and a matching mortise, or hole, in the other and fitting the two together. When the tenon is made separately and inserted, rather than carved out of the main piece, it is called a yatoi hozo.
