Folding screen

Tall panels hinged together so they could fold up and be stored away served as space dividers and room decorations. Each panel of the folding screens had a core mounted with a textile or other decoration and was set in a wooden frame. The Shōsō-in folding screens from Emperor Shōmu’s residence are listed in the Dedicatory Records of Tōdaiji (Tōdaiji kenmotsu chō), and include Feather-Decorated Screen Panels of Beauties Under Trees, screens with calligraphy, and others that mount large resist-dyed designs. Originally, the folding screens were kept in bags. Today, the remaining screen panels and many bags are kept separately.
