Hanpi

A sleeveless or short-sleeved vest used in the imperial court as part of the official court costume, hanpi consisted of two long rectangular strips forming front and back main body panels (migoro), a narrow collar (eri), triangular extensions (okumi) to the front panels and broad, often pleated, border (ran) to the hem. It was worn as an undergarment below robes. From the Nara period through the beginning of the Heian period, hanpi were made either of bast fiber or of plain-weave silk.
