撥鏤(ばちる)bachiru
象牙(ぞうげ)の表面を赤・紺・緑などの染料で染め上げ、その上に撥(は)ね彫(ぼ)りで文様(もんよう)を表す技法で、象牙の内部には染料が浸透しないため文様が白く表れる。さらに彫りを加えた部分に彩色を点じることもある。

Bachiru
A technique used to decorate ivory. First, the ivory is stained in red, blue or green, then it is hairline-engraved, exposing white ivory in the design lines. These white lines might then be colored in with different dyes or pigments.
