唐散楽(とうさんがく)tōsangaku

散楽ともいう。中国古代雅楽(正楽)に対する民間の俗楽を意味する芸能で、歌舞雑奏に次第に幻術・奇術を加え、曲芸なども加わり百戯などとも呼ばれる賑(にぎ)やかなものとなった。唐代には宮廷中心から民間に開放され、戯場も建って盛行した。わが国では唐散楽(とうさんがく)と称されて奈良時代には演じられており、後に猿楽(さるがく)、能・狂言へと発展したとされる。→散楽(さんがく)

Tōsangaku

Also sangaku. A performing art including circus acts brought to Japan from China in the Nara period and performed at temples and shrines. In contrast to gagaku, which was performed at the court, this was entertainment for all, courtier and commoner, and included a variety of stints, such as dances, magic, conjuring tricks, and acrobatics. In the Nara period it was known as tō sangaku, but later developed into sarugaku, which became the basis for noh and kyōgen in the middle ages.
