唐楽(とうがく)tōgaku
中国・唐から伝来した舞踊を伴う音楽。わが国で古代に行われた音楽の一つ。律令(りつりょう)制下で雅楽寮(ががくりょう)の楽として編成され、平安時代には林邑楽(りんゆうがく)・天竺楽(てんじくがく)とともに左方舞楽として整備統合された。

Music and dances imported directly from mainland China, these were performed by an orchestra of instruments including strings, like the lute (biwa) and zither (sō), percussions made from various materials, and wind instruments, like the shō pipes, various flutes and the oboe-like hichiriki.
