A pictorial weft-faced plain-weave technique where different colored weft threads are worked back and forth over short distances exclusively in the areas where they are needed for the pattern, creating dense color patches. Unlike the nishiki, where the pattern is controlled by a predetermined arrangement of heddles, the tapestry weave is totally hand-manipulated and has great freedom of execution.
