鼓(つづみ)tsuzumi
Tsuzumi
This hour-glass shaped hand drum has a long narrow body and two skins stretched over the hollow ends. In the Nara period the tsuzumi played in gigaku were hung around the neck and hit with both hands. In later centuries tsuzumi bodies gained broader rims and slimmer waists and were played seated with one hand holding the lashing cords and the other hitting the drum.
