スギ（杉）(すぎ)sugi
スギ科の針葉樹。木目の通った良材で、用途が広く、主に実用性の高い製品が作られた。正倉院宝物中では箱類・厨子などのほか、櫃類にも用いられている。

Japanese cedar
Cryptomeria japonica. A straight-grained, tall coniferous evergreen timber tree. The aromatic wood is soft, with low density, and perfect for light constructions, like the boxes, cabinets, and chests in the Shōsō-in, where it functions as an insect repellant as well.
