“Three baskets.” A Sanskrit term referring to the Indian Buddhist canon as a whole comprised of three categories, namely the discourses (Skt. sūtra), disciplinary texts (Skt. vinaya), and treatises (Skt. sāstra). In Japanese, the complete Buddhist cannon is referred to as issaikyō. While this term drops the meaning of “three baskets,” issaikyō editions group texts into the same three sections: the sutras (kyōzō), the precepts (ritsuzō), and the commentaries (ronzō). See Issaikyō.
