Household register. In Nara period Japan, each province collected information on the members of the households under their jurisdiction. These were compiled by geographical area. Each entry began with the name of the head of the household followed by members of his family. Often, the list of family members was arranged by age. People living in the precincts without blood relatives also appeared on these registers.
