Offerings
Offerings were donated to the Buddhist image or a temple to gain merit for the donor and enhance the ceremonies in which they were used. They include perishables like food and incense, but also sutras, religious implements, and precious objects. Offerings were often placed in elegant offering boxes (kenmotsu bako) made from rare woods and ornamented with marquetry and painting. These were displayed on beautifully decorated low tables or stands (kenmotsu ki).
