クロチョウガイ(くろちょうがい)kurochōgai
ウグイスガイ科の二枚貝。殻長(かくちょう)は十センチ程度。大型で殻はやや薄い。紀伊半島以南、インド洋や太平洋の赤道付近に分布し、浅い岩礁地帯に生息する。真珠母貝の一つである。

Black-tip pearl shell
The lustrous shell of the black-tip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera). This relatively large bivalve marine mollusk in the Pteriidae family has a distinctive black edge to its valves and grows amongst coral lodging itself among the barnacles. Its pearls are regarded as the highest grade and its inner shell was also used for decorative items found in the Shōsō-in.
