Bark binding. For this decorative technique, thin strips of tree bark are wound around sections of bamboo or wood at intervals. Used on cylindrical forms, like bows, flutes and penknives, kabamaki not only served ornamental purposes, but also prevented the bound bamboo from splitting and held together parallel strips of wood.
