大歌(おおうた)ōuta

Ōuta

Poetic songs recited at court to mark such important ritual occasions as enthronements and consecrations. Sung to the accompaniment of a zither, such as a koto or wagon, the words for some of the seasonal festival (sechi-e) songs appear already in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), though the ōuta recorded in the earliest imperial anthology of waka poems, the Kokinwaka shū, are different. The only ōuta still sung today is the one performed to accompany the ceremonial court dances known as gosechi-mai.
