Akoya pearl oyster
Pinctada fucata martensii. The shells of this bivalve mollusk form an oval with a wide flat hinge at the join. The rough outer surface contrasts with the thick glossy inner nacre coating. The nacre, extracted as mother-of-pearl, is a strong, resilient composite material that is valued for its metallic sheen. Commonly found off the coast of Japan. See also Mother-of-Pearl inlay.
